Hemper

The essence of Hemper

Working with a Nepalese industry that has been concerned about social and environmental respect from the beginning, Hemper projects an economic development that is not aggressive but one in which Nepalese cultural heritage is regenerated in value.

Its story

“We are social and environmental activists born in the 90s”, they say on their website. Hemper is a project born from a trip to Nepal that gave them a glimpse of the strength of hemp as a means of creating a sustainable model of production and consumption. That´s when they dared to embark on the adventure of creating a better world, under the tone of “… our future depends on people being fair to others”.

Its production processes

From obtaining the raw material to its processing, Hemper´s production never leaves its origins: Nepal. The hemp they use grows naturally in the Bajura Himalayan region, meaning it is not artificially cultivated. The dyes used to color the fabrics are natural. It´s a magical ritual that involves fruits, shells, minerals, roots and plants, a large pot and organized Nepalese artisans (Fair Trade in Kathmandu) as those in charge of all production.

Finally, its packaging emerges as a reciprocal solution between Hemper´s need to create sustainable packaging and the large amount of rice bags abandoned on the streets of Kathmandu, which may end up contaminating ecosystems. This is how, for three years now, these bags are collected, sewn and turned into the colorful packaging of all their orders, giving them two more lives, one as packaging and the second as bags that people can later use. In addition, these bags are an icon of one of the most significant elements of Nepalese culture that will now cross borders to bring its essence to the whole world.

Due to all these natural and recycling processes, the results are never exact, and one product is never identical to the other. Each one has its own story and is unique.

Social and environmental commitment

Throughout its entire production process, Hemper is constantly committed to preserving natural ecosystems by respecting environmental rhythms through the cultivation and sustainable harvest of hemp. Also, they take care of Nepalese cultural heritage, which has been threatened by faster and
cheaper textile materials and techniques since globalization. Its production has motivated different groups of hemp artisans to establish partnerships that did not exist (due to social and geographical differences) to create their own production line reaching levels of autonomy even beyond Hemper.
