January 28 marks the World Day of Action Against Climate Change, also known as the World Day for the Reduction of CO₂ Emissions. This date was designated by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness and educate the global population about climate change and its environmental impacts.
As in previous years, at EkoBlog, we believe it is essential to highlight the achievements made in the past year regarding environmental issues. It is important not only to reflect on the challenges we face but also to recognize the progress that brings us closer to a more sustainable future. In this article, we will review the main actions taken in 2024 to combat climate change and the progress made in various areas.
World Day of Action Against Climate Change: The Importance of This Commemoration
Global warming is one of the greatest threats to humanity and the planet. Greenhouse gas emissions, primarily CO₂, have increased global temperatures, causing extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and disruptions to ecosystems. This day aims to emphasize the urgency of reducing these emissions and promoting sustainable practices across all sectors of society.
World Day of Action Against Climate Change: Key Actions in 2024 to Protect the Environment
Throughout 2024, various global initiatives were implemented to fight global warming:
- International Commitments: During COP29, held from November 11 to 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan, negotiators agreed to increase climate financing for developing countries, raising the commitment to $300 billion annually by 2035. Although this figure falls short of the $1.3 trillion annually that experts estimate is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C, it represents a significant step forward in international cooperation.
- Development of Carbon Markets: At the same summit, rules were established for the creation, trading, and registration of emission reductions and removals as carbon credits. This agreement aims to facilitate the financing of low-emission technologies by allowing high-emission countries to purchase credits.
- Legal and Human Rights Actions: On December 2, the International Court of Justice in The Hague began hearings to issue advisory opinions on how countries should regulate greenhouse gas emissions and the consequences of failing to do so. While these opinions are not legally binding, they carry significant legal and political weight.
- Energy Transition: On September 30, the United Kingdom shut down its last coal-fired power plant, marking the end of 142 years of coal dependency and reaffirming its commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
- Citizen Mobilization: Throughout the year, global climate movements intensified their efforts, organizing protests and campaigns to demand stronger actions from governments and corporations. These mobilizations have been crucial in keeping environmental concerns on the public and political agenda.
World Day of Action Against Climate Change: Progress and Improvements Achieved
The actions taken in 2024 have led to significant progress:
- Emission Reductions: Countries that implemented renewable energy and energy efficiency policies reported decreases in CO₂ emissions, contributing to the goals of the Paris Agreement.
- Technological Innovations: New technologies for carbon capture and storage were developed and adopted, along with innovative renewable energy solutions that improved efficiency and reduced costs.
- Public Awareness: Education and awareness campaigns increased public consciousness about the importance of adopting sustainable practices, leading to changes in individual and collective behavior.
As every year, January 28 invites us to reflect on the challenges of environmental protection, but it also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the progress made. At EkoBlog, we believe it is crucial to highlight these advancements because they show that global efforts and collective action can have a real impact. Although there is still much work to be done, international commitments, technological innovations, and increased public awareness demonstrate that change is possible. The fight against climate change is an ongoing effort, and only through decisive and sustained actions can we ensure a sustainable future for future generations.
2024 has been a year of progress, but the challenge continues. Are we ready to redouble our efforts in 2025?
